Landscape Happenings: March 2026
Landscape Happenings is a brief, monthly series to give you insights into what's happening in nature and what to look for in your landscape.

What’s Happening in Nature
The rattling call of the Sandhill Cranes announces their return to Wisconsin’s wetlands. Robins emerge, and red-winged blackbirds stake out their territory. The earliest spring bulbs - crocus, winter aconite, and mini daffodils - brighten the muddy, brown landscape. This messy, transitional month can be one of nature’s most exciting and hopeful.
The Landscape Agenda
As the snow recedes, the first opportunities for gardening action arrive. By the end of the month, you can start cleaning up winter debris and mulching. Some gardeners elect to leave the leaves and perennial stems in place for another month or so - that’s where beneficial insects lay in wait. To bring color to your front door, fill your planters with unique arrangements of velvety green moss and other natural touches - a vibrant, earthy welcome to the changing season.
